Catch the light - products for shiny hair

Hair is the richest ornament of women.  Hair that catches the light and glistens with healthy shine from follicle to end. With all the styling tools we use on a daily basis, it can lead to major damage which can at times only be repaired by scissors and time.  Many companies have come out with products that allow you to protect your hair while using styling tools at severe high temperatures, and still keep your hair, healthy and add extra shine!

I'm going to list a few products that I have used, and tested on my own hair.  Some I have fallen in love with, and others...not so much. I love having shiny hair, but some shampoos and conditioners leave a residue on your hair right after a wash that can leave hair dull and lifeless.  I have also noticed that some shampoos can build up over time, so the first wash may look beautiful, but following washes can begin to make your hair look less and less appealing.  Just understand that it is not your hair, but probably the product.  The key is to notice this.

One tip I have found very helpful with leaving hair shiny, manageable, and easy to style is to not allow too much time to pass before you begin to blow dry your hair.  Wait several minutes before you blow dry, but try to avoid waiting for long periods of time.  It can make your hair coarse and dry in whatever position it is twisted up in under your towel or unbrushed.

Try to avoid brushing wet hair or rubbing your hair with your towel.  It can hurt and may pull out more hair than you would want.  Rubbing your hair with your towel can damage ends and create knots.

I have been a huge fan of Nexxus Shampoos and conditioners.  I usually used Nexxus Diametress Shampoo and Humectress Conditioner, but for the price, it was too little product.  I love to use a lot of conditioner so I would typically run out of Nexxus conditioner after 5 or 6 washes. Going out and buying another bottle of $17 conditioner is ridiculous, so I looked for something that was good enough, for a fraction of the cost.  I stumbled upon TresEmme shampoo and conditioner at Walmart which came in a huge bottle and for only $4 each. I wanted to give them a try and ended up knowing that my $4 was sent well!

TresEmme Moisture Rich Shampoo & Conditioner

The shampoo leaves my hair feeling clean and without any residue.  The conditioner is very rich and my hair feels silky even before I blow dry.  I know I said not to brush your hair when it's still wet, but I had to give it a try and it doesn't pull or snag on my hair since my hair is very well conditioned and smooth.

I bought the formula for dry or damaged hair since it would probably contain more nourishing extracts and conditioners than the normal hair formula.  There was also a formula for those who want an organic product. I hope to give that one a try later on.

For the price, I wouldn't look elsewhere. A 32 oz. bottle that leaves my hair shiny and healthy for $4 is a steal.  I may still buy my Nexxus goodies on occasion since I love the products and the scent, but TresEmma has made products that are serious competition.

Heat Tamers & Shine Shields

Kiwi Color Reflector (by Artek for L'Oreal) - this product is a heat protectant and silk shine for blow dry and wet styling.  It claims to create weightless shine, but I found it to be a bit greasy and take away from the natural look of shiny hair. The product feels more like an oil rather than a silky liquified consistency, so its a bit confusing to me how it would not weigh hair down during styling and make hair look a bit dull. Typically hair oils are used as leave in treatments.  It's just too thick.  I wouldn't recommend this for the person who is looking for that super shiny finish.  The product retails for around $15.

Hana Shine Shield Thermal Protectant - This product was sent to me courtesy of www.Misikko.com. I was sent the 2 oz. bottle which would retail for about $18.99 and is worth every penny.  You massage a tiny amount into your hair and then style it per usual. I used this in my hair on my birthday.  I was so surprised how shiny my hair looked in my photos. My hair was very manageable, soft, and light weight.  This product doesn't weight your hair down.  It's an amazing leave in treatment that is alcohol free, all natural, and locks in shine with the activation of heat. It also has a very lovely scent. I wish this came in a spray bottle. It would be so much easier to handle so you don't concentrate the liquid in one area when applied with your hands. One thing I did find to be a flaw in this product was that if you got it on your scalp, it will make your hair look greasy.

Chi Silk Infusion - Another product I was sent courtesy of www.Misikko.com.  I liked the Chi Silk infusion and I have for a while.  It's a very popular product and it does do its job, but I don't think it's as good as the Hana Shine Shield. I just found the Hana Shine Shield to be a bit more light weight and left my hair softer.  The Chi Silk infusion retails for around $15 and it's a best seller. Again, if you got it on your scalp, it will concentrate heavily and make your hair look greasy.

TresEmme Heat Tamer Spray

I've written and raved about this product before. It's cheap, easy to apply and does its job.  You can find this baby at any drug store and it will cost you under $10.  Its a wonderful thermal protectant and instantly tames hair, creates shine, and silkiness with the activation of heat. The only complaint I have about this product is the scent. It irritates me after a while, but a small price to pay for perfectly shiny and protected hair.

I use this product on my already blow dried hair right before I use a straightening iron.  If I blow dry my wet hair with this product already applied, my hair feels coarse, but when I spray it on my hair before and during the time that I straighten it, my hair is shiny, silky, and smooth.  If you are looking for a good replacement to the high end heat tamers like the Chi Silk Infusion or the Hana Shine Shield, this as close as you can get.  This product is one that you can spray all over your head, scalp, wherever you want, and then run your hot straightening iron or curling iron over, and what is left is strong, silky, insanely shiny hair.  I'm addicted to this stuff.

  8. Thanks for the hair tips because I need all the help I can get!! I heart your blog!!!!!!

  9. I'll have to try that Hana shine shield, it sounds great.

I tried out the TRESemme heat tamer spray and did not like it. I blieve the first ingredient in it is water which I found only makes my hair frizzier when I tried to use it for protection against blow drying and flat ironing. I have thick curly hair though.

  10. I forgot to say your hair is amazing! I especially love it in the last picture, it looks incredibly healthy and shiny. If I had your hair I would have no worries in the world. Lol jk. But it is beautiful!

  11. I've been using the Tresemme shampoo and conditioner for Brunettes and Redheads for years and I love it. <3 I also use the heat taming spray, though I don't blowdry my hair often. I also love their regular hairspray. :)

  12. your hair looks so shiny!! Amazing!

  13. I always use Tresemme's shampoos and conditioners.. they work so well! Haven't tried the heat tamer spray and I wont need to try another heat protectant in a while since the Hana Shine and Shield lasts forever!

  14. I find that switching my shampoo and conditioner every couple of weeks helps stop buildup-which seems to happen to me with every product so I keep a few I like and swap them in and out

  15. Yes! That is a great way to keep the build up away. I am also one who likes to switch it up every few weeks. The Nexxus digs a little deep into my pockets after a while haha. I'll use any drug store brands from time to time as well.

  16. Im using the same shampoo and chi silf infusion and hana shield. :) You have gorgeous hair missy!

  17. I like Tresseme conditioners also! I like the one that has the silk proteins in it. It's my fave from them.

Your hair looks great and good review! (=

  18. Which lipstick are you wearing here?? It's Lovely!
