8 Hair Myths - BUSTED!

We have all heard the myths and the rumors about hair care, and frankly, half of them sound just plain silly. I have done some research and wanted to put an end to the passing on of false information! In my lifetime I have heard some crazy tips about how to wash your hair, how to brush your hair, how to dye your hair, or anything else and I was on a mission to get the truth!

8 Hair Myths BUSTED
You can click HERE to read the InStyle article that appeared on Shine on Yahoo.com

About a month ago, InStyle.com had posted a beauty breakdown on Yahoo.com to all the hair myths and false advice that have circulated over time. They answer all the questions and de-bunk all the myths with a true or false answer and description.

According to InStyle.com, before you toss your favorite shampoo, or swear off coloring, lets separate FACT from FICTION!

Photobucket

1. True or False? Frequent Trims Make Your Hair Grow Faster

FALSE. "Hair grows from the roots, not the tips," says Michael Wright, senior research scientist at Nexxus Salon Hair Care. A trim removes split ends to prevent them from moving farther up the hair shaft, saving you from having to cut more to eliminate the damage. Keep your hair healthy in the first place with conditioning treatments and sun and heat protectors, says Saurabh Desai, principal scientist at Aveeno Nourish+.

Photobucket

2. True or False? Brushing Your Hair Often Makes It Healthier

FALSE. Brushing your hair 100 times before bed won't make your hair look any better. In fact, it might make it look worse. "Over-brushing can dull hair by destroying the cuticle, as well as causing split ends and breakage," says Desai. And using the wrong tool could further harm hair. In general, plastic and metal bristles can weaken the hair cuticle and cause damage or static and flyaways, so consider switching to a gentle brush with natural boar bristles. "Stick to just enough brushing to keep your hair from becoming tangled -- the brush should be able to move through the hair with ease," says N.Y.C. celebrity hairstylist Miok. For some, that might mean as little as a few strokes just once or twice a day.

Photobucket

3. True or False? Massaging Your Scalp Stimulates Hair Growth

FALSE. "Scalp massage can increase blood circulation, decrease stress and help distribute the scalp's natural oils onto the hair," says Desai. "All of this may lead to better functioning of the cells that are creating hair follicles, so your hair grows at its optimal rate -- however, that rate will not increase." On average, hair grows a half inch every month.

Photobucket

4. True or False? Chemical Straighteners Change Your Texture Permanently

FALSE. "As hair grows, your natural texture returns," says celebrity hairstylist Serge Normant at N.Y.C.'s John Frieda Salon. After a straightening treatment, the visible hair will be permanently altered, but the chemical process can't penetrate your roots. Likewise, daily blowout devotees might think they've unkinked their curls for good because hair starts to seem straighter over time, but what they're actually seeing is damaged hair that has lost texture, not a permanent change.

Photobucket

5. True or False? Wearing a Ponytail in the Same Area Can Give You a Bald Spot

TRUE. "The effect is called traction alopecia. The constant tugging by a tight band can scar hair follicles and cause them to stop growing new hair," says Doris Day, a dermatologist in N.Y.C. She suggests switching pony positions daily to alleviate tension. Tie back hair with a soft elastic band and wrap the ponytail as loosely as possible, suggests Desai. It's not just ponytails that can be the culprit, either -- headbands, braids and barrettes may result in similar damage when repeatedly worn in the same spot.

Photobucket

6. True or False? A Cold Rinse Adds Shine and Tames Frizz

TRUE. A blast of cold water at the end of your shower can make hair appear shinier because it temporarily helps the cuticle flatten down onto the hair shaft, explains Desai. But the results might not last if you don't properly dry your hair. Make sure the cuticle remains flat by applying a deep conditioner or silicone-based product to seal it.

Photobucket

7. True or False? Hair Can Become Immune to Shampoo

FALSE.
Shampoo will always do its job: clean. So why does it seem like your favorite bottle suddenly stops working? "Shampoo contains ingredients that condition and provide styling benefits, but it can also leave a residue that builds up," says Desai. If you start to notice dullness, use a clarifying shampoo (try Nexxus Aloe Rid Gentle clarifying shampoo, $11; at drugstores) once or twice a month to remove accumulated product -- any more often and you could strip hair of its healthy natural oils.

Photobucket

8. True or False? Coloring Can Change Your Hair's Texture

TRUE. Temporarily, of course -- but sometimes for the better. Permanent color removes the protective layer on your hair and lifts the cuticles so dyes are able to penetrate, says Desai, while semipermanent dye deposits color onto hair and is less harsh. Both methods have benefits, says N.Y.C. trichologist David H. Kingsley: "Color can swell the hair shaft and give it body." The change is especially noticeable on women with fine or thinning hair, as well as those with gray roots.

It's Your Call ... Is Coloring Hair During Pregnancy Dangerous?
Check with your doctor first, especially if you have allergies, but "it's probably not harmful. However, you should wait until the second half of your pregnancy when the baby is fully formed," says Eileen Krim of Northern Obstetrics and Gynecology in North Hills, N.Y. Can't go another second without a color fix? Krim recommends highlights "because they start a quarter inch from the scalp, where the dye isn't being absorbed into the body." If you're getting your hair professionally colored, "schedule the appointment for when the salon is less crowded," she says. "Definitely stay away from peak hours on Saturday afternoon to avoid inhaling fumes." If you choose to color at home, wait until the third trimester. "Work in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves," Krim says. Look for dyes that have low or no ammonia, and don't assume that "natural" dyes are chemical-free -- often these contain the same compounds found in regular hair color.

I think the craziest myth I've ever heard was that getting a trim during a full moon would make your hair grow faster...obviously we all know what the answer to this one is.

I hope you enjoyed this post and found it useful!

AVON Haul

I recently ordered some more goodies from AVON. I was very interested in some new items that were getting a pretty big buzz around the net, so I wanted to see how they worked for myself.

Magix Face Perfector
Photobucket

Price: $10

I was very intrigued with this product. This is a complexion corrector and face perfector and can be worn alone or under your foundation. Its a cream to powder formula and feels very light and airy on your skin. It does a good job with taking away the shine of your face and leaving a nice matte finish. I used it as a primer under my foundation in my LOTD in my last post.

Photobucket
Photobucket

I loved it because it was not greasy like some other primers can feel, i.e. - Smashbox photo finish primer. I have been depending on the Smashbox primer but sometimes would not like the almost greasy look and feel it left on my skin. I would have to apply blot powder on my face right after applying my foundation, but with this cream to powder formula from AVON, it turns to a dry airy texture on your face as soon as you rub it in. I love matte finish looks, with no shine, so this product is perfect for me. AVON has also started making it in a tinted version for darker complexions. It's very cheap too - $10.

Smooth Mineral Blush - "Bronze"

Price: $9

I am a big fan of Bare Mineral's loose powder bronzer in "Faux Tan" but wanted a lighter more natural looking color since I have not been able to get my tan back to what it used to be as of yet. Since I got pregnant, I haven't been out in the sun too much since I would get too hot, but since I'm not pregnant anymore I'm working on it now, with sun protection of course!

Photobucket

Photobucket

This bronzer doesn't have too much shimmer, so I like it. Shimmer is nice for some days, but there are days I would just like a shine free, shimmer free natural look. I also like the almost peachy brown color it gives off. As you have to know by now, I'm really into peaches and browns for the summer.

Photobucket

Glamsticks Eyeliner - "Emerald"

Price: $6

I have never owned a colorful eyeliner. I think the craziest I've ever went was white. I wanted to give it a shot so I bought an eyeliner in an emerald green color. I could definitely work with a color like this and see if I like it, then I can experiment with other colors as well.

Astonishing Lengths Mascara

Price: Originally $7.99 but now $2.99 with the 60% off sale going on now

I love AVON mascaras because they are typically "wet" and are applied coat after coat to give that real lengthening affect. I got a back up of my favorite "Astonishing Lengths" mascara in black.

Good things come...

...to those who wait!

I don't know how long you guys have been following and keeping up with my posts, but last September, I blogged about searching for dresses to wear for my birthday. My birthday is October 22nd, so I was giving myself plenty of time to figure out exactly what I wanted.

I put up some pictures of the options I had picked out and wanted to get opinions from my readers. I decided I was going to get the BCBG by Max Azria bandage dress in pink. You can check out my post about this dress HERE.

I was so excited to wear this dress and celebrate my birthday, but they didn't have the dress in stock! I looked everywhere and had not been able to find it, and it kind of ruined my birthday party plans. I never got a replacement dress since I was busy with so many other things at the time, and went to Ohio instead to visit Jerrid. Jerrid is originally from Ohio, so he was training for football there and he didn't have the chance to come down to Florida for my birthday. I really missed him and by the time my birthday came around all I wanted to do for my birthday was be with him. My birthday was spent quietly with my man and I really could not have asked for more, it was wonderful.

Today, Jerrid and I stopped by the mall just to spend some time walking around and out of the house. It was extremely hot and this was an outdoor mall, so to be honest, it was not too much fun walking around, but I did get a nice tan.

We stopped to get some food and drinks. We could not bear to walk another step without a break! The baby needed to be fed too.

Photobucket

We passed the BCBG store and I noticed they were having a sale, so I wanted to go inside to take a peek! Guess what I found! The dress I have wanted since last September was there, waiting for me!

We quickly picked it up, I tried it on, I loved it, and we bought it!

I love curve hugging dresses, so this dress is perfect for my taste. I love being a woman, and being a woman means having curves and feeling sexy and secure in your own skin.

Photobucket

The lovely pink color is perfect for summer, and my favorite!

Photobucket

We also stopped by the CCO that was in this mall, but they really are slacking on their selection of MAC products. I asked when their next shipment was and they told me it would probably come in sometime in August. Sunday, Jerrid and I plan to head over to the east coast of Florida to visit my parents, its just an hour drive, totally harmless. There is a wonderful outlet mall in Fort Lauderdale called Sawgrass Mills Mall. If you guys are ever in the area...it's a must stop to shop place! The CCO there is located inside the Off Saks so if Off Saks is having a sale...which is very often, the cosmetic products also count! I got my Heatherette lippie there and I plan on going back to pick up the eyeshadow palettes, they looked beautiful!

My look for today consisted of:

A neutral brown smokey eye. A very simple look to put together. I used NARS eyeshadow in "Galapagos" (a rich chocolate brown with gold shimmer) all over the lid of my eye, MAC "Carbon" (matte black) in the outer V and into the crease, blended it out with a nude colored eyeshadow from a random eyeshadow palette, and applied eyeliner to my upper lash line and my waterline. AVON Astonishing Lengths mascara and falsies.

To contour my cheeks and face, I used MAC blush in "Gingerly" to contour and MAC blush in "Spaced Out" to highlight.

For my face I used AVON Magix Face Complection Corrector as a primer. It is a liquid to powder cream that gives your foundation a matte look. I went light on the foundation since the AVON Magix face corrector really evens out your complexion but did use AVON concealer under my eyes in "neutral". I then sprayed on Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray.

On my lips I applied AVON Beyond Color Lip Conditioner, MAC lipstick in "Creme d'Nude" and topped it off with MAC Creamsheen lipgloss in "Partial to Pink" (Limited Edition from Creamsheen Collection)

Lorac Glam Rocks - "Metallic Pearl"

Photobucket

I have had this product from Lorac for quite some time now, I bought it last summer. I have blogged about it before, but not gone into much detail. I was really into the very spreadable and almost moist feeling of the loose pigment. I loved the color and had to get my hands on this cute little nubby! It was a hot item on Sephora's list and was worth the $16 price tag.

Many people would compare these identically to MAC Solar Bits pigments. The colors are very rich and metallic and the color payoff is beautiful!

I only own one color - "Metallic Pearl" but I am planning on buying the other 2 colors since Lorac is having a sale! The price has been cut in half for their VIP sale! You could now buy these babies for $8! Click HERE.

Here is a swatch of "Metallic Pearl":

Photobucket

The only con I could find about these pigments is the packaging. It's cute, but very messy. I would have preferred it to just be a screw top on an open jar. The sifter that Lorac placed into the container has an odd shape and makes it hard to save any excess that comes out, which means it will most likely just be wasted or accumulate around the edges. The excess pigment also spills out a bit when you unscrew the cap to use it, so you have to be careful with it. It's a good thing the top screws on nice and tight, or else this stuff would be all over your makeup bag.

Photobucket
Photobucket

Lorac added directions to applying these loose pigments to your eyes, but they seem to be a lot easier said than done.

The directions stated:
A) either to put your finger over the sifter, turn it upside down and spread what is on your finger to your eyelid.
or
B) If you use a brush, simply turn your jar upside down with the top on, turn it back right side up, unscrew the top and swirl your brush in the inside of the top. Use the pigment your brush picks up from the inside of the top to apply to your eyelid.

I had been using the latter and still ended up with so much excess pigment all over the edges of the container.

I would love to see Lorac come out with many more shades to this line of pigments but it would be amazing if they would change the odd shape of the package.

AVON Idea Shade Concealer Stick

Photobucket
Recently I mentioned how I was a big fan of AVON's Idea Shade Concealer Stick and some of your were curious as to what was so great about this product.

For some of us, concealer is the go to buddy to cover up our blemishes and get rid of dark circles under our eyes because sometimes foundation just isn't enough. Concealer comes in all kinds of tubes and jars, but I prefer a stick. It's handy and does not make a big mess, in fact, it becomes a very simple and quick touch up to do rather than a whole process. One thing to remember is that concealer can go on before OR after your foundation...there is no set rule! Whatever works better for you is what you should stick to.

I have always used MAC concealer sticks since they were so convenient and easy to apply, but paying $15.50 every time I needed to get a back up was getting a little too expensive. I found AVON Ideal Shade Concealer stick online and gave it a try and have been using it ever since. It cost's $6.00, which is 1/3 of the price of the MAC concealer and I would totally compare them to one another...in fact the MAC concealer is a little too cakey for me. MAC stopped making the concealer stick, which is so inconvenient for people who liked the quick and easy application of a stick. Now they made a foundation in a stick form, but it costs $29!

AVON's concealer is much lighter and smoother and does not have that waxy feel you get with most concealers. It goes on smooth with a very soft feeling and does not dry out and cake onto your skin. It is not runny like liquid concealers and you don't have to wait for it to dry. It is like a stick that is in between liquid and solid.

The shade I chose was "Neutral".

The packaging looks just like the MAC tube!

I'm quite lucky to have a mom who is an AVON representative, I get to experiment and try out all these great things and if I like them, I buy them for myself! I have another post coming up tomorrow with all the incredible goodies I picked up during my last AVON haul!

Swatch - Rimmel Lipstick - Alarm

As promised, here is a picture of Rimmel lipstick "Alarm" which I used for my Passion Has Red Lips post.

"Alarm" is a very pigmented and deep scarlet with excellent color payoff in every swipe. Alarm is the perfect name for this shade since it really is such a bold and bright red, definitely sends off warning signs! Perfect for a sultry red lip and runs for about $6 at any drug store.

Photobucket

For my look in the post Passion Has Red Lips I dabbed some L'Oreal Color Juice tube gloss in "Cherry on Top" to give my lips an extra pop of shine. I'll update with a swatch by tomorrow!

Updates: Diet and Fitness - COMING SOON!

Hello Friends!

Jerrid and I have been hard at working shooting pictures of amazing and simple exercises to show you guys and help motivate and encourage you! If you are in need of specifics, please leave me a comment with your question or request! Jerrid and I are putting everything together and will have a post up!

Jerrid is a professional athlete and has been committed to fitness and physical development ever since he can remember. He has experience playing in the NFL and is currently an arena football player. He is recovering from a slight setback because he had hurt his knee, but as soon as he gets better, his goals are to train hard and get back onto a team in the NFL.

Photobucket
Photobucket

Also, Jerrid's fitness blog is in the works! I have been such a bad designer and have been taking my sweet old time setting up his blog, but I realize its not about the looks of it, but it should be up as soon as possible so he can begin to get his words out there to all of you! As soon as his blog is up, I will post the link on my blog! He will focus on specific workouts for men and women separately, since we are built differently.

One thing to remember about diet and fitness is that there are no excuses and there is always a healthy way to do it! No matter what, you can always make time, and there is nothing that should be stopping you from being the YOU that you want to be! Being healthy and beautiful is worth the sweat and before you know it, you will be see results as long as you stick to it! We all probably spend about 20 minutes a day doing absolutely nothing, and we could be using those 20 minutes to be doing some kind of light exercise that could transform our bodies in as little as 2 months!

It's better to do it the healthy way than the quick and easy way which can seriously damage our bodies in the long run such as not eating and vomiting...those are not ways to live a healthy lifestyle.

I may have just had a baby 7 weeks ago, but it really is no excuse to just let yourself go and be unhappy with your body, there is no reason for that! In fact, letting yourself go during pregnancy is unhealthy for you because you have to lose that weight after the baby anyway, and it may be very unhealthy for your baby as well. Excessive weight gain is never healthy.

I am still on a mission to lose a couple of more pounds, probably around 5 more pounds would make me super happy! If I happen to lose any more than that...it would be great! I am 5'8''. Today I weighed in at 144.4 pounds and dropping down to 138 or less is my goal!

Photobucket

Let me know what your goals are and we can work on getting to our goal weight together!
